Keep our homeless warm this winter

Imagine swapping places with a homeless person even for just one night?

By keeping homeless people warm during the bitter winter months is a compassionate and important thing to do. Often being homeless isn’t a choice, it can come about through a series of unfortunate events that affect emotional, physical and mental wellbeing.

It’s important that children of school age are taught about homelessness; it can be a controversial subject to approach in schools and can be challenging for children to grasp without causing distress. It’s understandable that teachers or parents may feel anxious about answering awkward questions like ‘why is that lady sleeping outside?’ Here at Kids Just Recycle, we think a sensitive way to raise awareness is to help collect items for distribution later on in the year that will help keep our homeless warm this winter.

Did you know that you can install a FREE school branded recycled clothing bin into your school grounds and get paid for all reusable items you collect? We will pay you up to £400 per reusable tonne. We can also give you a smaller bin, again FREE, where you can donate sleeping bags and warm clothing that we can pass on to our charity partner HandsOn London. We don’t pay for these items but your support is invaluable as every year they work tirelessly to ensure that as many homeless people in London can stay warm and have access to vital services.

If you’d like to start teaching your primary and secondary school children about how to support the homeless in a positive way, contact our team today.

Other ways to support our homeless community is:

Support local shelters and charities: Why not contribute to local shelters, charities, or organisations that provide support to the homeless? These organisations often provide warm meals, shelter, and clothing during the winter months.

Provide hot meals and drinks: Distribute hot meals and warm drinks including soups, stews, and hot beverages as this can help provide nourishment and warmth.

Distribute hand warmers and thermal socks: Hand warmers and thermal socks can provide immediate relief from the cold.

Create winter care packages: Fill up and old shoe box with essential items like warm socks, gloves, a hat, hygiene products, and non-perishable snacks, these can be distributed through local shelters.

Raise awareness: Educate others about the challenges faced by homeless individuals during the winter and encourage them to get involved in helping out. You could also contact local government officials, attend community meetings, or join advocacy groups. Share information about available resources, shelters, and services.

Donate to homeless charities: Start a fundraising programme to help raise money for services during the winter, such as shelters, outreach programs, and cold weather initiatives.

Showing kindness and compassion to homeless people goes a long way in making a positive impact on their lives, especially during challenging weather conditions. If you’d like to make a difference to someone’s life this winter, get in touch today.
