Kids Just Recycle is raising awareness about the danger of landfill through our competition!
REDUCE LANDFIL WITH US!
Here at Kids Just Recycle we have now launched our competition which offers Schools, PTAs or Scout/Guide Groups the opportunity to win a £250 cash prize!
We are encouraging children up and down the country to get creative with their upcycling ideas and win a prize of £250 which can be donated to any educational setting/club (not individual). You just have to take a look at these fantastic flip flops made of old rubber car tyres and amazing mats made from old plastic bags, created in Africa. By reusing old textiles, we can create new and exciting products to use and reduce the risk of more waste in landfill.
Landfill sites in the UK are filling up fast and becoming a huge environmental problem. The team here at Kids Just Recycle are doing everything we can to raise awareness and keep as much textile waste out of landfill encouraging more recycling, repurposing and reusing.
Here are 16 landfill facts for you:
- There are over 500 landfill sites in the UK – have you ever seen one? They are well hidden!
- The largest in the UK was The Packington Landfill site near Birmingham.
- It closed in 2015 after 50 years of service after reaching full capacity.
- It was 380 acres in size and held a whopping 35 million tonnes of waste.
- Rather than waste being buried underground it forms towering mountain of waste in the countryside; not very nice to look at!
- According to a report in 2017, the UK only had 6.8 years left in terms of landfill space, which means that’s even less now in 2021.
- We are quickly getting to a time where we will have nowhere to store our non-hazardous waste.
- The largest landfill site in the world is the Apex Regional in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.
- It is 2,200 acres in size.
- Every day it receives 9,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste.
- It’s big enough to take 15,000 tonnes a day if needs be.
- This landfill site has a projected life span of 250 years.
- By this time 50 million tonnes of waste will have been dumped there.
- A 11-Megawatt power plant has been built there to utilise all the methane gas produced.
- It cost $35 million to build but it provides energy to 10,000+ households in Southern Nevada.
- These type of regeneration plants are essential in reducing greenhouse gases from our environment and we need to do more in the UK.
The Kids Just Recycle team are keen to raise awareness of these landfill issues and that’s why we know that our competition will get children of all ages thinking about how they can come up with a seriously smart and ingenious upcycled product, and send in their photos to our email address by Friday 16th of July 2021. We will announce the TWO lucky winners, receiving £250 each, for the new school year on Friday 10th September 2021.
If you know someone who would like to enter, they will need to send their entries to enquiries@kidsjustrecycle.co.uk by 16th July 2021.
