  • A person living in the USA produces 900kg of waste per year compared to 17kg per year in the Ivory Coast.
  • High level of household waste is mainly due to increased packaging use over the last 40 years.

Project ideas:

  • Visit a rubbish tip and create a graph of the variety of waste.
  • Set up a composting system and research biodegradable waste and plant waste.
  • Carry out a school waste audit and see what you are throwing away. Could you reduce the amount of waste by reusing and recycling?

Water facts:

  • Water covers 75% of the earth’s surface.
  • Seas and oceans represent 97% of all the water in the world with 2% in glaciers.
  • Less than 1% of all the world’s water is contained in rivers, lakes and ground water for human supply.

Project ideas:

  • Visit a water treatment site, look at the problem of managing the waste from water treatment.
  • Go dipping for small water organisms in order to find out more about these creatures.
  • Build a model representing the water cycle.
